Are You Emotionally Addicted To Food?

By Michael Bens You might overdose on potato chips or even perhaps tortilla chips once in a while, but did you ever consider that you might be addicted to food? The answer is very important, because it could be the key to determine what steps you need to take in order to lose weight. A significant number of medical experts say that food addiction is just as serious as nicotine or cocaine addiction, and it can potentially be just as deadly. An indicator of food addiction is when you find yourself with overwhelming desire for a particular food. The desire is so strong, and you are unable to consume that particular food, you begin to experience withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and depression. Food addicts desire the comfort that a particular food gives them. They also experiences bouts of binge eating of that particular food. The cravings may be physical as well as psychological. It should be noted that several varieties of food addictions exist. For example, there is compulsive overeating, where an individual goes on an eating binge that may last several days. The addicts do however lose weight, but tend to gain it back over time. Other symptoms include eating quickly, compulsively eating alone, and also eating when there is no evidence of hunger. Another common form of addiction is bulimia, in which the individual overeats, than purges the consumed food through vomiting or by taking laxatives. Signs of this condition include isolating oneself when eating, consuming huge portions of food rapidly, and being over conscious as well as preoccupied with ones weight. Food addiction also comes in the form known as anorexia, in which the individual attempts to starve oneself in order to achieve an unrealistic weight loss In a short amount of time. Anorexics tend to be around 15 percent below normal body weight and have a phobia about being fat and gaining weight. They often have difficulty eating with other people and appear to be obsessed with their weight. They also may suffer depression. There is good news! Food addiction can be successfully treated. Treatment can come in variety of forms. A food addict may work with a psychotherapist in order to develop new ways to deal with food and their emotions. The therapist might be able to identify the origin of individuals food addiction, and also discovers the reasons for the condition. In the majority of cases, the psychologist will help the individual develop a treatment plan which structures expectations and short and long term goals. In more serious cases an individual may chose to undergo in-patient treatment at a psychological facility. Treatment often involves helping the individual to return to a healthy eating lifestyle, deal with underlying emotional issues of food addiction, and learn to develop new coping techniques. Food addicts often follow the structure of the same kind of 12 step program used by alcoholics. By admitting their powerlessness over food, their belief that they could be restored to normal state of mind and an admission of their faults and failings. In addition food addicts often draw strength from support groups who have similar difficulties dealing with food. Knowing that there are other people who face the same challenges can be incredibly therapeutic. At this point, it is unclear whether food addiction is a genetic-based illness. Although there is evidence of eating patterns being passed down throughout generations. In fact, many food addicts many food addicts only seek help after they have concluded that their illness could adversely affect their children. It is entirely possible that in the long run food addiction can never be cured and only be treated. In other words, the recovery period can last a lifetime, yet one should never lose hope of beating food addiction. With patience and time, individual addicts can adopt behavioral skills which will enable them to keep their weight under control. Of course, there will be times when individuals will be tempted to indulge in food; however knowing the pain that they will undergo if they continue their harmful eating habits could be the incentive to fight against food addiction. Weight Loss Surgery: A Last Resort

Others have to undergo follow-up procedures to correct complications such as abdominal hernias. Gallstones - More than a third of patients develop gallstones as a result of losing large amounts of bodyweight following a weight loss surgery procedure. Nutrient deficiencies - Some weight loss surgeries disrupt the digestion process. Without careful dietary supplementation this can lead to deficiencies in many important nutrients, especially vitamins B12 and D, iron, calcium, and folate. Anyone considering weight loss surgery needs to weigh the risks against the benefits. They also need to realize that these extreme procedures are not cosmetic. Most patients only end up losing about 30% of their bodyweight and remain overweight for life. Simply put, weight loss surgery alone will not make you thin and beautiful. Christians in America - An Unbelieving Generation?

By Rob Marshall In a lot of ways I’m pretty average. I may be a bit taller than some, and probably weigh more than I should, but there isn’t really anything extraordinary about me. So when I read the stories in the Bible, and think about how the majority of the people who were there reacted, I assume that I would have done what everyone else was doing. One example is the story in Mark 9:14-29 about a father who brought his demon-possessed son to be healed. When the father came to the disciples, Jesus wasn’t there. He was with Peter, James, and John and they were on their way back from the mountain where they had seen Jesus transfigured before their eyes. As they approached the other disciples they noticed that a large crowd had gathered, and that the teachers of the law were arguing with them. When Jesus asked what they were arguing about, the man whose son was demon-possessed came and explained to Him how his son was being tormented by the spirit, and that he had asked the disciples to cast it out, but they hadn’t been able to. It’s at this point that Jesus says, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” (Mark 9:19) Like I said, I’m pretty average. If I had been one of the disciples it’s a good bet that I would have been in the middle of the crowd, arguing with the teachers, and trying to figure out why I hadn’t been able to cast them demon out. And it’s not like casting out demons was a foreign concept to them. When we look at Mark chapter 6 we see that Jesus sent them out, two by two, and gave them authority over demons. This was actually something that they had done before. But when I look at my life, I realize that even though there are things that I’ve done before, it doesn’t mean that it will be easy for me to do it again. All I have to do is look at how I spent the last few days, or weeks, in my life and realize that Jesus could very well look at me and say, “O unbelieving Rob, how long will I have to stay with you? How long will I have to keep reminding you of all that I’ve already taught you?” I don’t know about you, but when I’m faced with a new problem, or just an ongoing old one, I tend to forget all that God has already done for me. When struggling with financial issues I usually get discouraged and depressed. I focus too much on the problem, or what I don’t have, and I forget that all things are possible with God. One of the scriptures that I battle with the most is in Matthew 6:28-34, especially verse 33 which says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” I find myself worrying about what I’ll eat, or wear, or how I’ll pay my mortgage this month. In other words, I worry about “all these things.” This verse isn’t hard for us because God is asking to do something that is impossible. We have difficulties with it because it’s so unnatural. If we look around us we can see dozens, hundreds, maybe even millions of examples of people who worry about how they are going survive, let alone doing any better than that. The fact that we worry about it is normal in the sense that it’s something everyone does. But I wonder if Jesus would look at us, those of us in America and other countries where the Word of God is readily available, and just shake His head in frustration. Would He look at us and say, “O unbelieving generation, when are you going to finally understand? When are you finally going to believe?” We are surrounded with God’s word, it’s being preached in our pulpits, over the airwaves, and at us in our daily email devotionals, but do we believe it? In all fairness it is a frightening thing, the prospect of really believing God’s word, or really trusting Him. And it’s not about us having to do anything that is really crazy, or risky, but just trusting Him with our daily battles. It’s sad to think that Christians in America are just as likely to get divorced, struggle just as much as everyone else financially, and are just as unhappy with their lives as people who don’t believe in God at all. But I know that taking a step to trust God, to begin to pray with the expectation that He will answer and do amazing things in our lives, won’t be easy. Too often we end up like the disciples who watched helplessly as a demon-possessed boy fell to the ground and foamed at the mouth. We end up overwhelmed by our circumstances and unable to see how God can change things. Because I’m not particularly extraordinary, I’m just an average Christian; I have to realize that the same thing applies to me that applies to everyone else. I have to allow God to change me. I need to ask Him to open my eyes so that I can see beyond what’s happening to me and finally see what’s possible with God. I must let Him put my faith to the test so that He can remove my doubts. And even though that will be hard, the reward is that I will finally begin to truly have faith in God. Sedentary folks appreciate the opportunity to engage minds and hands in productive endeavors while seated in a favorite chair or relaxing environment, perhaps watching television or listening to music at the same time, or engaged in conversation with loved ones. There are those who crochet during their break and lunch times at work, or save their needlework for after dinner while resting in the family room. Some use their needle and thread as a focus point for gathering with others who enjoy this hobby. Sewing, whether it be through knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, darning, or quilting, as well as other forms, provides a creative outlet for those who want to express beauty or meaning through their hands but are unable or unwilling to do so via cooking, writing, or sculpture. It doesnt cost a lot to assemble the needed sewing materials; the correct size needles, thread, and fabric or background item is really all you need to start. You can put together a sewing basket later, if the hobby really takes hold. Learning how to make small, even stitches that repair torn seams or missing buttons is a valuable skill. Depicting artwork on handkerchiefs, pillowcases, or other household items makes a welcome heirloom for generations to come. If youre ready to give it a try, pick up a starter kit at your favorite craft or fabric store. Choose a time when other people or tasks wont bother you. Employee Benefits - Right Or Privilege

By Richard Hall Over the years, one of the most important factors candidates cited in searching for employment was benefits. Surprisingly this was second to salary. Considering the high cost of healthcare and prescriptions, benefits have played a vital role in the way people look for jobs. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have seen a decline in the benefits being offered. Companies are finding it difficult to keep pace with the rising costs of insurance and other employee benefits, forcing them to either reduce or eliminate their offering. Many believe that employees are entitled to benefits, feeling it is the companys responsibility to offer some level of support. Others believe that employee benefits are a privilege not a right. For this group, they believe that any offering is better than nothing at all. Adding further fuel to this hotbed issue the number one reason that people file for bankruptcy is medical bills. So, what is the truth about employee benefits is it a right or a privilege? Lets begin by addressing the many inaccuracies and misconceptions relating to employee benefits. Myth: For Only large companies are required by law to provide benefits. Truth: The truth is that while some benefits are mandated, the majority are not. Standard benefits such as healthcare, holiday pay, and vacation are routinely offered by companies of all sizes as part of a benefits package. While most companies do offer some or many of these benefits, from a legal standpoint, these benefits are not actually governed by the law. In a competitive marketplace, employee benefits can be the deciding factor for many candidates. Organizations offer these benefits in order to attract and retain high quality employees. Business owners know that providing perks to employees is a worthwhile investment to attract a higher caliber of employee. Therefore, while the company has to spend significant money to provide this type of coverage, they do so as an investment to growing business, and attracting and retaining a talented workforce not because they are required to do so. Todays world is highly competitive. Individuals who have graduated with a BA or even MBA usually only work for top companies. This means that for small to medium size organizations to compete they have to find creative ways to make the opportunities more appealing. Another misconception is that people are entitled to time off for vacation. Again, this is something offered, not mandated by law, as most people believe. Now, when it comes to receiving vacation time, if it is provided by the employer, it must be treated in the same way as wages, being earned daily, which is law. The other factors protecting the employee from accrued vacation is that once it is earned, the company cannot renege by taking it back and if the employee leaves the company, regardless of termination or voluntary leave, he or she must be paid earned income. The examples listed below will provide you with an idea of what is the employees right versus privilege: Any company with a minimum of one employee is required to provide unemployment insurance, which is covered 100%, meaning the employee pays nothing. Workmens Compensation This too must be provided for any company with one employee to include disability income, medical benefits, and time off, paid for by the company at 100%. Pregnancy Disability Leave For companies with a minimum of five employees, reasonable accommodation must be provided, typically between four and eight weeks. Vacation This benefit is not required under current law although any vacation must be accrued and paid out to the employee upon separation from the company. Sick Pay Again, by law, this is not required. However, under the Federal Medical Leave Act (FMLA), employees under certain circumstances would be provided time off (up to 12 work weeks within a 12 month period) without pay while the current job is protected. FMLA would cover issues pertaining to death in the family, medical leave, adoption and serious health issues of immediate family members. Holiday Pay This too is at the discretion of the company and not mandated. Pension and Retirement While this would not be mandatory, any coverage provided would need to follow strict ERISA regulations and tax laws. Healthcare Insurance Finally, health insurance is not required by law. However, when coverage is offered, it would fall under the direction of COBRA, Cal-COBRA, and HIPPA regulations. As you can see, most employee benefits are in fact a privilege and not a right. While job seekers and employees might deem it unfair or even immoral, it is what the law currently states. Food - How Good Is It Really?

By Michael Russell Today, everyone is health conscious. Because of the rising costs of healthcare and the ever increasing number of people who are becoming ill younger in life, we have finally decided that it’s time to start eating right. But is the food we eat, that is considered “healthy” really all that good for us? We take a look at some of the issues concerning the food that we eat. For people who are concerned with eating healthy, one of the main things that we are told to do is to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. While this is certainly a good idea, it may not be as beneficial as it was about 40 years ago. The question is why? The answer may not be so obvious unless you understand how food is grown today and why. Years ago, it didn’t cost all that much to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. So if some of it was destroyed by pests or weather it wasn’t such a hardship. Farmers still did well. But today it’s a totally different story. Farm costs make it very difficult, especially for the small farmer. So to keep costs as low as possible and to preserve as much of the food they grow as possible, they need to use chemicals to keep pests away. While this is great for keeping away bugs, it’s not so great for the food itself. When you combine this with the depleted soil that we have to deal with today, what happens is that the same apple that we grown today when compared to the same apple grown 40 years ago simply doesn’t compare. The apple of today doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of vitamins and minerals as the apple of 40 years ago. As a result, it just isn’t as healthy for us. And this problem extends to all freshly grown foods. But this problem extends beyond freshly made foods. It also extends to meats and processed foods as well. With meats, the problem is that many animals are fed steroids in order to fatten them up for sale. This was something that was unheard of 40 years ago. As a result, the meats that someone gets today do not compare in nutrition to the meats of yesterday because of what these steroids do to the quality of the meat. With processed foods, the kind you get in a box, this problem is even more compounded. While processed foods were never exactly the healthiest in any era, at least back in the good old days all the ingredients were natural. There were no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Today, you can’t look at a box of anything without finding at least a half a dozen unnatural elements inside of it. This certainly makes these food worse than their counterparts of yesteryear. Unfortunately, because of the rising costs of food and the necessity of keeping everything fresh as long as possible, it is unlikely that this trend is going to reverse or even slow down. Therefore it can’t help but make you ask the question, “How good is your food, really?” Most people would say it’s not too good. By Jennifer Akre At first glance, you may be tempted to think that luxurious cushions are necessary when it comes to being comfortable when sitting in any piece of Adirondack furniture. Short List Of Things To Do For Your Lawn (January - February)

By Terry Blackburn Winter. January. After the New Year, your life will return to normal. The holiday season is officially over and you will be anticipating the arrival of spring. Your lawn may not look like much. If you live in a region that sees a lot of snow, you may have been looking at a white blanket for weeks. Your grass may appear lifeless and your plants have long since bloomed in the sunshine. But there is work to be done. You will have to go outside at least once a week and walk through your property and check for problems that you will have to take care of once the warmer months have arrived. In January, you should be concerned with damage to your lawn sculptures and other decorative items. When inspecting these items, you should: Check for cracks in the foundation of concrete bird baths, sculptures, and statues Look for signs of discoloration that could be the early signs of rust. Check for water and snow damage Check for broken pieces Remove any decorative items that cannot be fixed If possible, you should wrap up these items in order to protect them from the snow and water. If you can move them to a safer place, that would also help. Lawn decorations can be expensive and in many cases, one of a kind. Protecting these items should be high on your list when getting ready for winter and also during the winter season. February In February, it is cold and the snow may still fall, but there may be more rain than in previous months. This is a good time to check your plants, shrubs, and grass for damage that you may have to correct in the spring. You should look for the following: Grass: Discoloration of grass Thatch Bald spots Thinning Sod issues While there is little that can be done until the ground becomes less frozen, you should plan to aerate the soil as soon as possible. If you have thatch, be sure that you have to the equipment to remove it. If you notice pieces of sod are missing, you will have to replace it as soon as the weather warms up. Trees: Discoloration of bark Bent branches Holes in trunk If any of your trees seem unhealthy, you should mark them so that you can see if they improve over the next few months. If you notice any branches that are bent, you can leave them alone as long as they cannot fall and harm any part of your home or other people. If they could harm your property, they should be removed as soon as possible. Plants: Roots Color of leaves Stance Most plants should be just fine in cold weather. Make sure they are standing tall and are not being weighed down by snow, wind, and rain. Shrubs: Roots Color of leaves Shrubs should also be fine during this time.
